CHICAGO (May 6, 2026) – The American Burn Association (ABA), in collaboration with the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®), has introduced a new scholarship program aimed at supporting nurses and aspiring nurses as they pursue continued education and career growth.
Announced in recognition of National Nurses Week (May 6-12), the ABA-BCEN Nursing Advancement Scholarship will provide financial support to individuals working toward degrees in nursing and related healthcare fields.
Funded by a $35,000 contribution from BCEN®, the scholarship program will award seven $5,000 scholarships to ABA members pursuing higher education in nursing and healthcare-related fields. The initiative is designed to help offset the cost of education while encouraging continued professional development within burn and emergency care.
“This scholarship reflects our commitment to strengthening the burn care workforce by supporting those who are dedicated to advancing their education,” said ABA CEO Ed Dellert, RN, MBA, CAE, FACEHP. “Investing in professional growth helps ensure that patients and families receive the highest quality care possible.”
The scholarship is open to BCEN-certified nurses pursuing advanced education, as well as firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and paramedics pursuing a nursing degree. Funds may be used for tuition, required fees, and course materials.
“This collaboration is about making advancement more attainable for those committed to emergency care,” said Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CPHQ, CENP, ICE-CCP, FABC, CEO of the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. “By helping reduce financial barriers, we’re supporting dedicated professionals as they take the next step in their education and careers.”
Applications are open from May 6 through June 15, 2026. Recipients will be selected through a competitive review process conducted by the ABA Nursing Committee. Awards will be announced in late July.
In addition to providing financial assistance, the scholarship supports broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare workforce by encouraging degree completion, facilitating career progression, and supporting entry into nursing roles.
